Prenatal Acupuncture, Chiropractic, and Massage in Brooklyn

Carrying a pregnancy is physical work, and it shows up in your back, your hips, and your sleep. Book acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, chiropractic care, or massage at the same center where you see your midwife. Newborn circumcision can be arranged too.

Care for the Body Doing the Work

Prenatal visits track how your pregnancy is progressing. They are not really built to deal with the hip that has been aching since week 24, or the nights you spend rearranging pillows. These sessions are. They run alongside your care at Birthing Center NYC rather than replacing any part of it, and nothing about your regular schedule changes.

Prenatal acupuncture session at our Brooklyn birth center

Prenatal Acupuncture

Fine, sterile, single-use needles are placed at specific points and left in for a stretch while you rest. The room is quiet. Almost everyone tells us afterward that it hurt less than they had braced for. In traditional Chinese medicine the practice is framed as moving qi through the body.

The reasons clients book it change as pregnancy goes on:

  • Early on, nausea that will not lift
  • Through the middle, back and pelvic ache as ligaments loosen
  • Later, sleep that keeps breaking
  • Any point, stress that has stopped being just mental

How people respond varies, and acupuncture is not a substitute for prenatal care. Several points are treated differently or skipped entirely during pregnancy, so working with someone who sees pregnant clients regularly matters here more than it would otherwise.

Craniosacral therapy during pregnancy at Birthing Center NYC

Craniosacral Therapy During Pregnancy

If you have ever left a massage feeling worked over rather than rested, this is the opposite of that. You stay dressed. The practitioner rests their hands lightly at your head, along your spine, and near your pelvis, and works slowly. Nothing is pressed hard and nothing is adjusted.

It tends to suit people who want:

  • An hour where the nervous system finally stands down
  • Release in the jaw, neck, and shoulders where stress collects
  • Something extremely low intensity when other bodywork feels like too much
  • Rest, without having to explain why they need it

Being straight with you: the research base for craniosacral therapy is thin. Think of it as comfort-focused rather than treatment for a specific condition. Anything that actually worries you belongs with your midwife first.

Prenatal chiropractic care for pregnancy back and hip pain

Prenatal Chiropractic Care

Relaxin loosens your ligaments, your weight moves forward, and your posture compensates in ways you never agreed to. A lot of what hurts in the second half of pregnancy is mechanical, and chiropractic care works directly with the joints, muscles, and ligaments involved, mostly around the spine and pelvis.

Clients usually arrive with one of these:

  • Low back pain that has stopped responding to stretching
  • Sciatic pain running down one leg
  • Upper back and neck tension
  • A general wish to stay mobile through the last eight weeks

Prenatal appointments use different positioning and a lighter touch, with tables and supports set up for a growing belly. Mention to your midwife that you are going, so everyone involved has the same information.

Prenatal and postpartum massage in Brooklyn

Prenatal and Postpartum Massage

A prenatal massage is not a regular massage with a pillow added. You are positioned on your side and bolstered, pressure is matched to how far along you are, and certain areas are handled differently than they would be otherwise. After the birth, the focus shifts to the neck, shoulders, and low back, which is where feeding and carrying a baby land.

What brings people in:

  • Tightness through the low back, hips, and shoulders
  • Legs and feet that feel heavy or swollen by evening
  • Sleep that has become a negotiation
  • One hour with no one asking anything of you

Before your session, tell us anything relevant from your history: blood pressure concerns, any history of clots, or something your midwife has raised. That shapes how the therapist plans the hour. If you are not sure whether massage is a good idea at this point, ask her first.

Newborn circumcision arrangements for families in Brooklyn

Circumcision

Some families decide this long before the birth. Others are still weighing it in the first days. Either way, parents who give birth outside a hospital often find there is no obvious next step, and they end up asking us where to go.

We can point you toward experienced providers in the area, whether you are planning a religious bris or a medical circumcision, and help you think through the timing alongside everything else happening that week.

  • Timing, and what needs to be true before a baby is ready
  • What the procedure involves and how comfort is handled
  • Aftercare over the following days
  • Fitting the day around a birth center or home birth recovery

Circumcision is elective. Major pediatric bodies describe the health benefits as real but not sufficient to recommend it for every newborn, which is why the decision belongs to parents. Talk it over with your pediatrician, and mention any family history of bleeding disorders.

Who Can Book

Anyone pregnant or postpartum, whether or not your care happens with our midwives. If you are already a client, we will try to line a session up with a day you are coming in anyway. In the third trimester, saving a trip is not a small thing.

No packages, no minimum. One session is a perfectly normal way to use this.

Booking, Sessions, and Payment

Call the office and we will find you a time. Session length and current pricing are confirmed at booking, since both vary by therapy.

What About Insurance?

Usually these fall outside maternity benefits, and coverage differs a lot between plans. Some policies carry a separate acupuncture, chiropractic, or massage allowance that may apply. Ask your insurer about those benefits specifically rather than about pregnancy coverage, since the answer often lives in a different part of the plan.

Coming to the Center

Sessions run at our Brooklyn center, the same place you see your midwife. Families come to us from across the borough and the wider city, and most people book on a day they already have a prenatal visit.

These sit alongside everything else we offer, from prenatal and postpartum care to birth itself. You can see the full list on our services.

This page is general education and not medical advice. Acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, chiropractic care, and massage are supportive therapies that work alongside prenatal care rather than in place of it. Speak with your midwife or physician before starting any of them, and contact your provider directly about any symptom that concerns you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is acupuncture safe while I am pregnant?

It is considered low risk when a licensed practitioner who regularly treats pregnant clients provides it. Some points are approached differently or left alone at particular stages, which is the part that makes prenatal experience matter. Let your midwife know you are going, the same as you would with anything else you add during pregnancy.

How early in pregnancy can I have a massage?

Opinions differ on the first trimester and some practitioners prefer to wait. Tell us how many weeks you are when you call and we will confirm what suits where you are.

What happens in a craniosacral session?

You lie on a treatment table with your clothes on while the practitioner makes light contact at your head, spine, and pelvis for the length of the session. No adjustment, no deep pressure, nothing cracking. Most people describe it as restful and a good number fall asleep partway through.

Can I still see a chiropractor at 36 weeks?

Yes, late pregnancy visits are routine. Positioning and technique are modified, and the table and supports are set up for a belly. Keep both providers informed: tell your midwife you are going, and tell the chiropractor what has come up in your prenatal visits.

Will any of this help my labor go more smoothly?

We get asked this a lot and would rather give you an honest answer. These are comfort therapies. Arriving at labor better rested and less physically wound up is worth something on its own, but we do not claim they shorten labor or reduce pain in birth, because the evidence is not there. If preparing for labor is the goal, childbirth education is built for exactly that.

Can I book more than one therapy?

Yes, and plenty of people do, often massage for the muscular side and acupuncture or craniosacral work for sleep and stress. There is no package and no minimum, so mix them however suits you.

When does a newborn circumcision usually happen?

A religious bris traditionally falls on the eighth day. Medical circumcisions are typically done within the first weeks, once a baby is feeding well and has been examined. Your provider will confirm whether your baby is ready, and we can point you toward experienced providers in the area.

Does insurance pay for any of this?

Often not through maternity benefits, though some plans carry a separate acupuncture, chiropractic, or massage allowance. Ask your insurer about those benefits by name. Call us for current session pricing.

Something We Have Not Covered?

Ask before you book rather than guessing. We are happy to talk it through.
